Quarry of the church
An ancient quarry of Verezzi stone in a suggestive karst environment
The old “quarry of the church” takes its name from the San Martino church that is close to it. It is set on top of the Verezzi ridge just beyond the Crosa village. The quarry with its hand cut walls is set in a woodland setting behind the church and cemetery.
Close by there is a large karst sinkhole, typical manifestation of the erosion from water of the Finale stone and Verezzi stone limestone. Along the path that takes to the quarry there is an abandoned large block of stone. The blocks were taken down the valley by ox carts to be boarded on the beach of Borgio. The path was then called “of the mad carts”.
